Mouthguards and TMJ Appliances

Mouthguard or TMJ Splints can be custom made to protect your teeth, joints and muscles if you grind or clench your teeth.  Since the jaw muscles can be one of the strongest muscles in the body, occlusal wear can be severe if not treated.  The bite guard is worn at night when most unconscious grinding and subsequent damage to the teeth occurs.  People who find they grind their teeth during the day, may also wear their guard during the day.  If one knows that they are grinding during the day, an "open in the front mouthguard", appropriately named a Day Guard, can be made as an alternative. The example here is called a Hard/Soft nightguard.  It has a soft liner inside the mouthguard, which is very comfortable.  These come in clear, blue, pink, green, and red.

Protection of the front teeth is critical when playing contact sports, such as soccer, football, hockey, wrestling, and even baseball.  We can make custom made mouthguards in lots of different colors for the athlete in the family.  All it takes is a simple impression.  The Athletic mouthguard shown is called a Play Safe Mouthguard by Glidewell Labs.
